I’ve never written a review this long in my life.

Usually, when I like something I order online, I leave five stars, write a sentence or two, and move on.

But somehow I’ve had more conversations about a laundry basket over the past few weeks than I probably had in the previous thirty years combined.

Ridiculous, I know.

But it all started with my daughter.

She walked out of the bathroom holding my old basket.

My daughter was visiting for the weekend and had gone upstairs to get ready.

A few minutes later she appeared in the hallway carrying my old plastic laundry basket.

You probably know exactly the kind I mean.

Beige plastic. Scratched. Discolored. One of the handles beginning to crack.

Not quite broken enough to throw away.

But definitely not pretty.

I laughed.

Mostly because she had caught me.

Whenever somebody came over, I moved that basket.

If we had guests staying, I pushed it into a closet.

If I was tidying the bathroom, I hid it behind the door.

I had never really thought about why.

It was just one of those ugly practical things you gradually stop noticing.

That evening I started noticing all the things in my home I had learned to ignore

I looked around our bedroom.

I had carefully chosen the bedding.

The lamp.

The rug.

The curtains.

Even the little things sitting on the dresser.

And then there was this enormous beige plastic basket that looked as though it belonged in a utility closet.

The next morning, I went online.

I was only looking for a replacement.

And instead of looking like something that needed to be hidden, it looked like part of the room.

I nearly talked myself out of ordering.

I’m skeptical of things I see online.

So I inspected every photograph.

I zoomed in on the stitching.

I looked at the handles.

I wondered whether the basket would actually stand upright.

And somehow my plan to buy one basket turned into an order for three.

Then the package arrived.

This was the moment I stopped worrying.

The first thing I noticed was the quilted detail.

The basket felt soft, but it still had enough structure to hold its shape once opened.

That had been one of my biggest concerns.

I didn’t want a fabric hamper that looked wonderful in product photos but collapsed into a pile when you actually used it.

This one looked lovely even empty.

But the thing I liked most had nothing to do with how much laundry it held

I left it sitting beside the dresser.

And I didn’t move it.

That might sound completely insignificant.

But I had spent years moving the old one whenever someone visited.

With this one, it simply stayed there.

And strangely, the whole corner looked more finished.

There was still laundry inside.

I hadn’t suddenly become more organized.

But the room looked nicer anyway.

Then I put one in the bathroom.

That was when I started understanding why I was glad I had ordered more than one.

The bathroom basket holds towels.

The bedroom basket gets everyday clothes and bedding.

And the third basket?

My daughter immediately claimed that one for herself.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who liked them.

The moment my daughter saw the third basket, she started talking about where she would use it in her own home.

She first said laundry.

Then blankets.

Then she decided it would probably look better in her bathroom.

By the end of the weekend, the basket I had originally planned to keep in the guest room was leaving the house with her.

Which, I suppose, is a pretty good review by itself.

Four things surprised me after actually using them.

1. They hold more than they look like they should.

I regularly fill ours with towels, clothes and bedding.

The opening is wide, so you don’t have to fight with a narrow lid.

2. They look good even when they’re full.

This sounds like a silly thing to care about.

But when something stays visible in your bedroom every single day, it matters.

3. They are much nicer to carry.

My old plastic handles became uncomfortable as soon as the basket was heavy.

These are much easier to move from one room to another.

4. They are useful far beyond laundry.

Towels. Throws. Toys. Spare bedding. Clothing.

I could easily imagine using one for knitting supplies or anything else that tends to accumulate in a corner.

I think some objects make a room look cluttered even when the room is clean

Plastic bins are one of them.

Cheap hampers are another.

You stop seeing them after a while because they’ve always been there.

Then you replace one with something you actually like and suddenly the room feels different.

The laundry is still there.

The chores haven’t disappeared.

But at least the basket no longer looks like one.

My husband thought the whole thing was rather funny.

When the package arrived, he looked at the three baskets and said:

And yes.

Technically, we did.

We also had towels before I bought nicer towels.

We had lamps before I replaced the ugly one in our bedroom.

Sometimes you replace something not because the old one completely stopped working…

…but because you’re tired of looking at it.

A week later, he admitted these looked better.

I have chosen to consider that a victory.

The only real problem was choosing which designs to order.

I expected to find one or two I liked.

Instead I kept changing my mind.

Coastal designs.

Florals.

Animals.

Soft traditional patterns.

Some look perfect for bedrooms.

Others feel almost made for bathrooms, nurseries or guest rooms.

Which is probably why the Buy 2, Get 1 Free offer makes so much sense.

Would I buy them again?

Yes.

And I already have.

My daughter liked mine enough that I placed another order for her.

She chose her own designs this time because apparently my choices were “too coastal.”

Daughters remain opinionated no matter how old they become.

My final verdict is actually very simple.

I did not need a beautiful laundry basket.

My old plastic one technically worked.

But I’m very glad I replaced it.

These hold plenty.

They’re lightweight.

They’re practical.

They work for much more than laundry.

And most importantly:

I haven’t hidden one behind a door since they arrived.

Sometimes that is reason enough.
